How to Make Cooking Tallow
Share
Tallow is a versatile, nutrient-rich fat that’s perfect for high-heat cooking. Making your own tallow at home is simple and requires just a few steps!  High in healthy fats, tallow is packed with fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) that support overall wellness
Ingredients:
- 2–5 lbs of Rocking R Beef FatÂ
- 4 cups WaterÂ
- 3 TBS salt
Equipment:
- Sharp knife
- Slow cooker, large pot, or oven-safe dish
- Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
- Glass jars for storage
Â
Instructions:
 1. Prepare the Fat:
- Trim off any meat or gristle from the fat.
- Cut into small chunks or run through a food processor for faster rendering (this is our preferred method).
 2. Render the Fat:
- Place the fat in a large pot or slow cooker and add water to cover.
- Heat on low and let it simmer for 6 hours, stirring occasionally.
- As the fat melts, it will rise to the top while impurities settle in the water.
 3. Strain the Tallow:
- Carefully pour the liquid through a cheesecloth on top of a fine mesh strainer into a large metal bowl.
- Let it cool in the refrigerator; the tallow will solidify on top, and the water/impurities will remain at the bottom.
4. Separate & Store
- Once fully cooled, loosen the tallow by pressing on one side and lift the solid tallow off the top. Â Discard the remaining gelatinous water.
- Flip the tallow over and scrape off any impurities on the bottom with a knife, they will be a darker color than the creamy white tallow. Dry off any excess water on the tallow.
- If needed, repeat Step 2Â for extra purity.
- Store two ways: Cut into chunks and store in an airtight container or melt and pour into a jar. Â
- Store in the fridge (up to 3 months) or freezer (up to a year).
Enjoy your homemade tallow—perfect for healthier cooking for frying, roasting, or even skincare!Â
